5-Axis CNC Milling Machine – Röders VR

Why 5-axis milling?

With five simultaneously controlled axes, the tool can access the workpiece from virtually any angle—without the need to re-clamp the part. This offers three specific advantages over 3-axis machining:

Fewer tensioning operations. Complex parts such as molds, turbine blades, or medical implants require machining from multiple angles. On a 3-axis machine, this means re-clamping for each new angle, with the associated risk of measurement deviations. A 5-axis machine processes all sides in a single setup, eliminating the cumulative margin of error that occurs with each new clamping.

Shorter cycling times. The tool can maintain an optimal angle relative to the surface at all times, resulting in a more efficient cutting process and less air cutting. In practice, this means a 25–50 percent reduction in cycle time for parts that would otherwise require multiple setups.

Improved surface finish. The ability to tilt the tool relative to the surface ensures that the cutting edge always operates with optimal contact geometry. The result is a more uniform surface finish and less need for manual finishing—which is crucial in mold manufacturing, medical technology, and the aerospace industry.

Röders – Precision in 5-Axis Machining

Röders TEC has been developing high-speed milling machines for over 25 years and has more than 3,000 machines installed in 50 countries. What sets Röders apart from other manufacturers is the combination of linear motors on all axes—instead of ball screws—and a proprietary control system with a 32 kHz control frequency. The linear motors eliminate mechanical wear and provide unmatched dynamics and positioning accuracy. Röders’ geometry compensation and temperature control keep tolerances stable during long runs, even during unmanned operation.
