What is a CNC lathe? 

A CNC lathe is a machine used in industry to machine materials, usually metal, into specific shapes and sizes with high precision. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, which means that the machine is controlled by a computer that follows pre-programmed instructions. This technology has revolutionized the manufacturing industry by offering a combination of speed, accuracy, and automation. 

How does a CNC lathe work? 

A CNC lathe works by rotating the workpiece while one or more tools move along different axes to remove material and create the desired shape. The process is controlled by a computer that uses a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) drawing to program the machine's movements. The operator only needs to load the program and monitor the process, reducing the need for manual intervention and minimizing the risk of errors.

What is a CNC lathe?

A CNC lathe is a lathe machine in which all linear and rotary movements are controlled by a computer (Computer Numerical Control). This enables automated, repeatable machining with high precision down to ±2 µm and provides the conditions for unmanned operation and real-time process data logging.

What does CNC mean?

CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control – a control system that converts G-code or CAM-generated tool paths into precise servo movements. The system offers parametric control, adaptive feedback, and remote diagnostics via OPC-UA or MTConnect.

What is the difference between a manual lathe and a CNC lathe?

The difference is the level of automation. The manual lathe uses hand wheels and readers; the CNC version runs on G-code and servo-driven axes. The result is 3-5 times more parts per shift and inline tolerance measurement.

What is the difference between a CNC lathe and a conventional lathe?

A traditional (manual) lathe requires constant manual control; each cut depends on the skill of the operator. In a CNC lathe, the movements are performed by servo motors according to a program, which provides:

  • Reproducibility – identical measurements in thousands of cycles

  • Higher cutting data – stable feed rate and surface smoothness

  • Unmanned operation – machine utilization rate > 90% %

 

What is the difference between a lathe and a milling machine?

  • Lathe: The workpiece rotates, the tool moves linearly – creating cylindrical shapes (shafts, bushings).

  • Milling cutter: The tool rotates, the workpiece remains stationary – creating prismatic shapes (plates, fixtures). Modern multi-operation lathes, e.g. Nakamura-Tome WY-100V, combines both processes with Y and B axes for complete detail in one setup.
